Paris Plages 2017: swimming and activities on the banks (without sand)

When will Paris Plages open? Each year, the arrival of sand in Paris makes us want to rediscover the quays and gives the city a tropical touch for the pleasure of tourists and Parisians alike. In 2017, Paris Plages will feature many changes: beaches added to the left bank, a huge pool in the basin de la Villette and (the biggest shock of all) 3,000 tons sand will no longer be there! We will tell you everything…

You’ve always loved Paris Plages – well, so do we! Since 2002: 16 years, 3,500 tons of sand, 550 lounge chairs, 450 umbrellas, 50 palm trees and dozens of activities awaited us at Voie Georges Pompidou, much to the chagrin of drivers who could not drive here for a whole month.

Over the years, the Mairie de Paris has invaded the Hôtel de Ville square and the Bassin de la Villette to offer Parisians different ambiances: lazing about on the Voie Pompidou, sports, culture and movies on the Parvis de l’Hôtel de Ville and a beach resort at Bassin de la Villette!

This year, Paris Plages will return from July 8th to September 3rd, 2017 in four separate venues:

  • Voie Georges Pompidou (Rives de Seine Park on the right bank):

On the right bank, at the Voie Georges Pompidou, Paris Plages offers hundreds of lounge chairs, misters, picnic tables, refreshments, ice cream makers and various athletic activities such as foosball tournaments, beach volleyball, tai chi sessions, dance workshops and a free library amidst a tropical environment of palm trees!

  • Port de Solferino and Invalides – (Berges de Seine left bank):

New! The Paris Plages activities will also take place on the left bank of the Seine, with dozens of lounge chairs, misters, picnic tables, refreshments and ice cream makers so you can party all the way to Pont Alexandre III!

  • Parvis de l’Hôtel de Ville:

As part of Paris Plages, the Parvis de l’Hôtel de Ville becomes THE place to be with several highlights: the Fnac Live Festival and a running track will animate the summer as part of France’s bid for Paris to be chosen as the location for the 2024 Olympic Games.

  • Bassin of the Villette:

In 2017, Paris Plages transforms the Bassin de la Villette into a summer resort. Lounge chairs, pétanque, water games, entertainment and shows will be on the program, as usual. And this year, Paris Plages will install a swimming area at Bassin de la Villette, located on the Quai de la Loire, with three pools open from July 15th to August 15th, 2017, every day from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m!

Whether you are on the right bank or at Basin de la Villette, more than 54,000 hours of fun and leisure time await us for two whole months, from 9:00 a.m. to midnight. On the four premises, pop-up libraries and restaurants (savory pancakes for around €5, meals for €12 and ice cream for €3) ensure that we can stay in one spot all day without having to return to the hectic Parisian life.

Reading on the quays while watching the bateaux mouches float by…there’s nothing better than relaxing in the summertime!
