QYRQ QYZ AND THE FORTY YOUNG GIRLS

QYRQ QYZ AND THE FORTY YOUNG GIRLS – EPIC MUSIC OF THE STEPPES REGION IN CENTRAL ASIA

Qyrq Qyz, the legendary epic music of the Steppes region in Central Asia, magnifies the feminine heroism of forty women warriors. With the help of the traditional repertoire and mesmerizing images, Saodat Ismailova delivers a contemplative musical fresco.

ABOUT THE SHOW – A production of the Aga Khan Music Initiative

A land of legends, the Steppes of Central Asia are the cradle of the epic Qyrq Qyz music. Transmitted orally from generation to generation, the saga of the “forty young women” tells the story of female Amazon warriors who are gathered by their charismatic leader, Gulaim, to chase invaders from their lands.

Mixing projections and live performance, the show by Uzbek videographer Saodat Ismailova reconstructs the Karakalpak epic story in a musical and visual fresco, orchestrated by composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky and incarnated by young traditional artists from Central Asia.

The show transforms secular recitation into a motionless journey at the heart of the only female epic still performed in the Muslim world.
